The Ugly Truth About Aging: What It Takes To Prevent It

Did you know that atrophy of volume in the face begins at age 30? This typically presents as fine lines & wrinkles, hollowing of the temples, sunken in eye-sockets, thinning lips, sagging skin, the appearance of drooping jowls around the mouth, and so much more.
In addition to volume atrophy, around age 35, the facial skeleton will begin to undergo loss of bone mineral density. Overtime, this presents as a change in the overall shape and appearance of the face. This contributes to the occurrence of volume atrophy creating even more evident signs of aging.
As we begin to notice these signs of aging, it is important to understand how to both prevent and treat these issues. Traditionally, the aesthetics industry has been known for Neuromodulators, such as Botox and Dysport, to temporarily diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in certain areas of the face. Dermal Fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane, have been used to add volume to the lips, cheeks, temples, under eyes and chin. These are fantastic options to enhance your beauty & maintain a youthful appearance; however; aesthetic clients are disregarding the need to prevent and treat the root of the problem in addition to receiving their injectable products.
So, where do we begin when starting our anti-aging skincare journey? The first step of preventing these signs of aging is to start an anti-aging skincare regimen. Depending on your adherence to your skincare regime, budget, and overall commitment to your anti-aging journey, there are so many different options available. As a skincare professional, I have a few non-negotiable skincare products when it comes to aging.

1. Growth Factor Serum:

a. The use of a Growth Factor Serum signals various mechanisms in the skin to repair cellular damage and stimulate the induction of collagen and elastin production. There are several different types of growth factors offered within the world of skincare, such as plant growth factor and human growth factor. Using a medical grade growth factor product that contains human growth factor typically offers the best result due to the human to human cell communication that occurs when the product is applied to the skin.

b. Our favorite Growth Factor products are the SkinMedica TNS Advanced+ Serum and SkinMedica TNS Recovery Complex.

2. Retinoid:

a. Using a product that contains a retinoid, such as a Tretinoin or Retinol, treats various skincare concerns in relation to cellular function within the skin. Primarily, a retinoid is known to treat signs of aging and acne. Both Tretinoin and Retinol are topical products derived from Vitamin A. It promotes skin health by replacing your old skin cells with new skin cells due to increasing their turnover rate. It also will contribute to treating clogged pores and excessive oil within the skin.

b. It is very important to consider the quality of the retinoid you choose when selecting a product. Many products that are marketed as Retinol or Retinoids within retail stores do not contain pure retinoic acid or adequate percentages of retinoic acid to promote cell turnover. A product containing retinoic acid should appear yellow or off-white in color. Retinol in its purest form is yellow, and can quickly lose patency in the product formulation process. This commonly happens with non-medical grade or non-prescription strength retinoids.

c. It is important to start using a low strength retinol and to work your way up for maximum effectiveness. Our favorite is SkinMedica’s Retinol Complex 0.25%. I suggest starting with using the product 2-3 times a week and gradually increasing the frequency until you are able to tolerate using it daily. Once that point is reached, it is then an appropriate time to increase the strength of the retinoid to a 0.50%.

d. Purchase SkinMedica Retinol Complex 0.25%

i. It is important to always wear sun protection when using a product containing retinoids. It can make your skin more prone to sun damage which then accelerates the aging process.

3. Antioxidants

a. Antioxidants are found in a variety of different skincare products. Antioxidants benefit the skin by preventing or slowing down the process of aging and cellular damage. They can protect the skin cells from free radicals, pollutants in the air, photo-induced aging, and inflammatory reactions. The use of antioxidants in skincare products help us to maintain a glowing, smooth, and bright complexion.

b. Commonly used antioxidants in skincare include Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E. It is important to see a skincare professional to decide which antioxidant is best for your skin type.

c. Some of our best selling targeted antioxidants are Zo Skin Health’s Daily Power Defense, Illuminating Aox, and 10% Self Activating Vitamin C or SkinMedica’s HA5 and Lumivive System.

d. Purchase a Zo Skin Health Antioxidant

e. Purchase a SkinMedica Antioxidant

After adhering to an anti-aging skincare regime, it is important to consider a full treatment plan that is effective in stimulating collagen and elastin. Luckily, there are so many different options when choosing a treatment plan that is best for you. Our practice utilizes several different Laser platforms, Microneedling Options, and Biostimulatory injectables to create the most effective individualized treatment plan for patients. When choosing an aesthetics practice to receive anti-aging treatments, consider their ability to treat your concern, credibility, device exposure, and training.

1. Laser Treatments

a. Laser energy is beneficial to prevent and treat aging because the energy is absorbed by the skin creating a controlled injury to targeted areas of the skin. The controlled damage stimulates the body’s natural healing response to rebuild collagen and renew the appearance and health of the skin.

b. There are various different options of lasers to consider in regards to treating and preventing signs of aging. It is best to seek help in determining what treatment is best for you by scheduling a consultation with a Skincare Professional who is certified in operating a laser.

c. Laser Options Offered at RevitalyzeMD

2. Microneedling

a. Microneedling Treatments work by creating thousands of micro injuries in the skin, which then stimulate the body’s natural wound healing process. When this process begins, growth factors are released which results in boosting production of collagen and elastin. There are many options available for microneedling treatments.

3. Biostimulatory Injectables

a. Biostimulatory Injectables offer an immediate, short-term plumping effect post treatment; however, the primary goal is to stimulate your body to produce its own collagen, providing long lasting fullness and skin rejuvenation benefits.

b. Biostimulatory Injectable Options Offered at RevitalyzeMD

As you can see, there are several different pieces that contribute to the overall anti-aging treatment plan. It is not immediate, and it is not a “one and done” type of treatment. It takes commitment, adherence, patience and consistency to achieve your desired results. It is important to choose a skincare professional that will educate, encourage, and hold you accountable during the entirety of your treatment plan. Cheers to enhancing your natural beauty & aging gracefully!
